Carrum Downs Secondary College

Where Every Student Grows

Berry Street Educational Model (BSEM)

We have invested in whole staff professional development to ensure all of our staff are able to support all students in the College. The Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) came together from years of experience and research around Trauma-informed, strengths-based education.

It a practical approach to teaching and learning equipping staff with necessary skills and strategies to provide a safe and supportive classroom. In particular, those with complex and unmet needs, which improves wellbeing and academic outcomes for all students.

BSEM comprises five domains:

  • BODY
  • STAMINA
  • ENGAGEMENT
  • CHARACTER
  • all anchored by RELATIONSHIP

How does this look in a classroom setting? We have consistent and predictable entry and exit routines in the classroom, ready to learn plans and a scale for students to rate themselves on their readiness to access learning for that lesson. Teachers schedule brain breaks and positive primers into their lessons and identify character strengths and uphold unconditional positive regard for all of our students.
